Pink Cookies in a Plastic Bag

source-may-1993-_44-resize.jpg

Unfortunately, I’ve been very sick and stressed lately so I’ve been out of commission.  I still have some other personal issues to deal with so I’ll be posting rather erratically over the next month or so.  A funny couple of questions popped into my head over the past week while I was lying in bed sick.  What if a blogger, whose blog you occasionally visit, suddenly dies?  Would anybody know or care?  Lastly, I may be turning this little blog private in a week or two so be on the lookout for that as well.

The May 1993 issue of The Source featured LL Cool J on the cover.  I really didn’t think LL fit in with the ’93 era of hip-hop but I went to the record store and picked up the CD anyway.  I mean, Mama Said Knock You Out was still a rather good album and I figured that he must have had something left in the tank regardless of that horrible ‘How I’m Comin’ video.  Well, suffice to say I was wrong.  I tried so hard to convince myself and everyone else in my dorm that 14 Shots to the Dome was good but in the end, I gave up.  I remember debating about it with this guy named Kam and he said, “Vince, some of the beats are good but I can see some other rappers freaking it differently.”  I quietly stopped listening to LL after that and played The Beatnuts, Masta Ace and Brand Nubian the rest of the spring/summer.

Some other highlights from this issue:

– Books documenting hip-hop culture begin reaching the mainstream

Sadat X with the hip-hop quotable for “Pass the Gat”

Funkmaster Flex takes over the airwaves in NYC

Dr. Dre and Ed Lover star in Who’s the Man – My theater teacher took a few weeks off that semester to be in the movie.  He was the baldheaded sergeant.

Slick Rick keeps his head up in the joint

Record Report highlights:

Geto BoysTill Death Do Us Part (3.5 mics)

– Who’s the Man – Soundtrack (4 mics)

The BeatnutsIntoxicated Demons (3.5 mics) – Still my favorite Beatnuts release!

Lords of the UndergroundHere Come the Lords (3.5 mics) – Why does this album sound gimmicky to me now?

Masta Ace Inc.Slaughtahouse (3.5 mics) – Definitely should have been 4.5 mics easily and not just because it’s my favorite Ace album.  I don’t know how many times I stopped by Terrell’s dorm room between classes and heard this album blasting while he and Rahman were playing Madden or Mortal Combat on Sega Genesis.  It’s a ridiculously great album.

  1. Looks like a great issue. Intoxicated Demons & Slaughtahouse are indeed classics.
    Hope you feel better, Vince.
And if you make this thing private, send me an invite!
    Please and thank you.

  2. Thank you so much for these scans. Dope blogg

  3. What kind of personal issues, man? I’ve been going through some issues too.

  4. I did actually think about that as well; I also kept an eye on WYDU, for any news regarding this blog that might pop up.
But you’re right, death on the Internet is a remarkable thing, it’s something I’ve discussed a lot with friends after we had a couple of beers. It’s very intriguing.

Anyways, on to merrier things: thanks for yet another great scan! Hopefully I’ll be included if and when you go private.
Good luck with all your personal stuff as well

  5. Out of all the great albums in the record report (Ace, Beatnuts, Geto Boys, etc.), why does the Who’s The Man soundtrack get the best rating?

Even funnier is the LL interview; he keeps talking about his album doing 8, 9, 10 million. . .did he actually even listen to that shit sandwich?

  6. I hope you feel better soon. Take care man.

  7. The proof is in the pudding. Well…the Source’s pudding. Everyone always complains how Hip-Hop was sooo great back when, look @ these mic ratings. Same ratios as the present time…

  8. Thanks for the scans & i hope you feel better soon!!
    Saludos!

  9. Thanks for all hard work of scanning. It has brought back alot of great memories.

I hope your illness is not that serious. Stay strong, and you hope you feel better.

  10. Your post is food for thought.Frankly,we live in an egocentric and self serving society but the beautiful thing is guys like you who take the time to share with us.The ugly is in the majority and the beauty in the minority who share and helps each other out:)
