Hip Hop Hooray!

source-march-1993-_42-resize.jpg

The March 1993 issue of The Source featured Naughty By Nature on the cover.  Way back when, they successfully created sing-songy jingles while maintaining respect in the industry.  About a month ago, me and my girlfriend were watching one of my old VCR tapes with ’93 videos and Yo! MTV Raps episodes.  We watched the episode with Fab 5 Freddy interviewing Spike Lee while he was directing Naughty By Nature’s “Hip Hop Hooray” video.  It seemed as if every hip-hop artist in the world was there at the video shoot.  Check out the video on Youtube to see some of the cameos in the video.  I’m sure Naughty was on top of the world at the time but with the slew of great albums coming out that year, I had forgotten I had even purchased 19 Naughty III by the time April rolled around.  I always felt that that album was as high as they could go and then Treach would break out and go solo for at least one album.  But alas, it never happened.  I really wanted to hear him rhyme for an entire album over some Primo and Pete Rock beats without Vinnie chiming in here and there.  I guess he was being loyal to the group but this is one case where I believe the lead artist needed to step out on his own.

Some highlights from this issue:

Snoop Doggy Dogg with the hip-hop quotable for “Stranded on Death Row” – But Rage was much better…

– Yo! MTV Raps gets condensed

Brand Nubian returns without Grand Puba

Luke in Japan

  3. you ever hear naughtys first album as The New Style? It’s pretty good in a looking back almost 20 years later kind of way.

  4. Remember the issue well…also remember EazyE in the NBN Hooray video and he looked like he couldn’t even keep up with the beat.

  5. @bbatso – Never heard that New Style album. If you have it, please share.

@CommishSH – Eazy E looked lonely, offbeat and sick at the video shoot. He seemed like he was saying, “Would someone please be my friend?” I felt sorry for the guy.

  6. Real talk.

You help me get through my day.

This sh*t is hip hop nerdie goodness.
